Class II Summer Gathering New River in WV July 18 & 19

There's water in WV!!

I will be coordinating Class II trips on the upper sections of the New River in WV for the Coastals Summer Club Gathering.

We will likely paddle the Surprise section (Thurmond to Cunard) on Saturday. And the Glade Creek section (Glade Creek to Grandview Sandbar) on Sunday.

We will meet at the same time and place as the gorge paddlers: 10am Saturday and 9am on Sunday behind the office at Ray's Campground in Hico, WV. Please let me know if you're coming. (Don't just show up.)

The club will be gathering on Saturday evening for a potluck meal at Ray's Campground in Hico, WV. I'll be camping there.

I will join you on Saturday with my wife and kids. We will have 2 K1s and 3 IKs.

We are staying offsite, but will be at Rays by 10:00.

That's great Walter! Will any of your family be paddling again on Sunday?

I don't think that they will paddle on Sunday.

Hi Terri,

I'm a member of Coastals, but I've only done one trip with you all a couple of years ago, on the Maury. In any case, I'd like to do Saturday or Sunday of this trip--not sure which day would be best for me. I've paddled the Glade Creek to Grandview Sandbar section (a few years ago), and really enjoyed it. I'm a novice paddler, but a good amount of experience on class II rivers (Nantahala, Laurel Creek/ South Fork of Holston, Maury, Balcony Falls section of James, etc.).

Terri, re the pot luck meal...
Lee won't be there, so people will need to bring their own plates, utensils, and a serving spoon if they have food to share.

We will likely paddle the Glade Creek to Grandview Sandbar section of the Upper New on Sunday.

Saturday will likely be Prince to Thurmond (Silo section) or Thurmond to Cunard (Surprise section).

Just to let you all know, the New River in WV is going up pretty high. It might be fine by the weekend, but I will be watching.

There's a chance the Class II sections will be too high for me, but others might go. There's also a slight chance other Class II rivers in the area will be runnable.

Please chime in if you have any ideas.

The latest guesses are that the New will drop low enough for safe runs on the upper Class II sections on Saturday and Sunday!

I'll be camping at Ray's Friday and Saturday nights. See you all on Saturday at 10am.

My best guess (and I've studied it some) is that all things New River in West Virginia will have calmed down by Saturday and that we will enjoy nice water levels.
