Bottom Tye or Piney/Tye, SUNDAY May 18

Post by GinnyN »

The rivers are super high now (Wednesday evening).  I have hopes that they will come down to sane levels by Sunday, but not be too low.  Time will tell.
The bottom Piney alone I'd want 150 cfs to 300.
We need 170 - 600 cfs (combined cfs of Piney and Tye) for the Tye.

https://waterdata.usgs.gov/combined-loc ... period=P7D

I have my doubts that there will be enough water for the Piney, but it is always my first choice.
For more information about the Tye - On https://rivers.run/#tye look at the Bottom (Depot to Falling Rock) section of the Tye.

Both the Tye and Piney are fun class 2. The bottom Piney will require a bit more maneuvering.
We will meet at the side of the road near 79 South Powells Island Road, Arrington, VA. There is limited parking there, so we need to be conscious that this is a well used country road and park kinda tight.

I'll figure out a meet time when I know who wants to come.

Anyone interested?

Thanks for coordinating the trip. If we get to paddle the Piney/Tye, I am in. If we are paddling the lower Tye, only to the first bridge, I am out. Lovely section, just too short.

It's looking more and more like it'll be the Piney, into the Tye

Ginny - thanks for coordinating trip. If the Piney/Tye, I am in. If just the lower Tye, only to the first bridge. I am out. Too short. Looks like my brother Scott and nephew Leo (both have been on the Jackson Pulse 3 times) are interested to go too. Total 3 in my crew.

Ginny - thanks for organizing this paddle - we had over 14 paddlers - beautiful Class I, IIs - some rock gardens - wave trains - a few strainers to avoid and a fantastic adventure to portage a strainer - there was generosity of spirit and team work to make it happen. Great fun - great day on the water! Thanks! bn

I would like to thank Ginny and all the helpers that made the Piney/Tye paddle such a great trip. The trip was well attended, with great coordination, and safety oriented. It is not often we get to paddle this section due to low flows. It is such a lovely section. To get to paddle the section with so many friends and have such good coordination, both on and off the water, made it even more enjoyable.
Thank you all.

When we put on sometime between 11:30 and noon, the Piney was at 225 CFS and 3.35 feet and the Tye at 363 and 4.3.

This was a fun level with lots of play features and eddies and drops to practice basic creek moves. Quite a few good surfs and some 360 holes as well.

The weather was great. We had a good group and a fun day.

Thanks to Ginny for coordinating everything.

Yes, Ginny, thanks for all the herding of cats that you did to make this trip happen. We had 18 boats on the river - wow! And despite a river wide strainer and a couple other downed trees, no one got caught. Thanks to Raymond for the creeking instructions before-hand, and Jenny's careful probe skills that helped us avoid any mishaps - everyone took it slow and kept an eye on everyone else. Also, Ginny, let us know if there's a way for us to thank the landowner for mowing the take-out and making it so accessible for all of us.

Thanking the landowners of our take-out is a great idea Barb.
I'm thinking that I could send them a copy of the trip report that Diana said that she would do.
