OCT, Saturday, April 12, Beginner Trip, Spring Gathering
Good morning,
Beginner Trip: Saturday’s Spring Gathering
As part of our menu of trips for this Saturday’s Spring Gathering, I am organizing the beginner trip on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
We had planned to run the Maury River from Jordan Point Park in Lexington down to Rt 60 DWR access.
The level is fine as of 8am, today, 4/8 but dropping. So, I am watching the gauge and will report back on Friday late morning.
The backup plan is to run the James, Buchanan to Arcadia. Both runs are suitable for beginners and those wanting to take a it easy with only level 1 and simple level 2 rapids.
Again, will post Friday late morning with the river we will run on Saturday. Expect to call for shuttle at 11am no matter which river I choose.
Please respond here or email me if you are planning to join this trip (johnfesta@comcast.net).
We have lots planned for after the Saturday paddle.
This is part of our Spring Gathering, so I hope you’ll join us for a catered dinner at 6 PM at Glen Maury Park. Provide your own beverages, and to round out the meal, consider bringing a side dish or dessert to share. If joining up, please respond to Nancy Ronald’s Facebook or Coastals forum post so she knows how much food to order. At 7 pm Appomattox River Company will present a program on new ideas and trends in boats and gear.
Cheers.
JJ

Re: OCT, Saturday, April 12, Beginner Trip, Spring Gathering
Good morning,
Based on the Maury gauge we will tomorrow be able to do the Maury River from Jordan Point Park in Lexington down to Rt 60 DWR access (6 mile trip). That said, please check back Saturday morning. I will post by 530am a final good to go or other directions. Sorry for the churn but, the amount of rain we will get keeps changing and it is smart to check where the Maury level is tomorrow morning.
Please dress for rain and cold since the water temp is only about 59 deg and the high air temp for tomorrow is foretasted for 53 deg.
Here are the details.
Please plan on meeting at 11am at the Jordan Point put-in to set shuttle. I am known for starting on time so suggest you arrive early, before 11am to do whatever setting up you need. Plan on cars rolling by 11:15 thank you.
Here are the location addresses for the put-in and take-out. Just put these addresses into Google and you will be there.
- Put-in: Jordan's Point Park, Stono Ln, Lexington, VA 24450.
- Take-out: VMI Route 60 Bridge Boat Launch, E Midland Trail, Buena Vista, VA 24416 (note this take out has various names depending where you look it is actually adjacent to Rout 608 and often called the Route 608 access).
Please let me know if you plan on joining the trip.
