OCT: Maury Rockbridge Baths Saturday, May 13

Post by Raymond »

I’m planning to run Rockbridge Baths to Copper Road. The low water back-up will probably be Balcony Falls section of the James. Check back Friday for confirmation.

Meet at 11:00 a.m. at the putin to set shuttle. Putin is Rockbridge Baths Post Office for the Maury; Locher Landing at Jarvis Trail, Glasgow, for Balcony.

Make sure you don’t park in the Post Office parking areas.

This is a novice/intermediate level trip.

The long range forecast calls for several possible thunderstorms/showers in the Rockbridge area, so let’s hope there is enough rain to keep the river levels above the minimum.

Respond here or call/email if you plan to join us.

Hey Raymond,
Ken & I are interested. Watching the weather forecast. Wish the rain was coming earlier!

Based on the forecast, I've decided not to go.

Raymond has run into a snag and won't be available to coordinate this trip so I have agreed to step in for him. ..... Haha, just in time to not make the difficult decisions! I get it that folks need to plan for a drive but we are facing some unsettled weather.

With zero rain I'll project the Maury at Rockbridge Baths USGS gauge to be at 1.6'. We ran it just recently at 1.7, about an inch higher and thought it was okay. Based solely on that I'm inclined to stick with Raymond's original plan, namely Rockbridge Baths at 11:00, not blocking postal patrons, testing a new paddling zero.

Enter the local forecasts. A front is expected to move through bringing with it a 70% chance of "scattered" and "numerous" thunderstorms. Scattered and numerous?! I don't expect the rain to do much of anything to the water level. I will check weather this evening and in the morning and post what I find.

Low water tolerance and weather tolerance vary greatly, make your own call. If you wish to drop out, that's fine but please try to let me know.

Cheers,

Ken Dubel

Sooo, the Maury is dropping slower than I expected so a low water run seems even more reasonable. The big "if's" are whether or not it will be raining and whether or not that rain will involve electricity. My best guess is that there will be a rain shower at some point and that it will involve electricity. Nothing to worry about? Not my claim. Does it bother me? Not really. It's a fairly narrow river that is generally surrounded by hills and cliffs a.k.a. high points away from the water. Lightning is unpredictable, make your own choices.

I have excellent reasons to be in the area anyway so I plan to be there at 11:00. It's tee-totally okay if nobody shows up so don't feel obligated. I suggest making your own call in the morning.

Cheers,

Nothing much has changed since last night. I plan to be there across from the post office at 11:00.
