I am interest in this trip and watching the thread. I've not canoed this section - just section above 64 but below Rockbridge Baths. How long is it? Do folks ever link it up with the balcony section of the James (another section I have, surprisingly, not yet run). James Vonesh
This is an easy class I-II run, when there is enough water, minimum of 500 cfs for a doable low flow. 1000 t0 2500 cfs is preferable. It is an 11 mile float. There are three blown out dams in the run, Class II-II+, water level dependent. Two of the have sneak arounds that are easy. You could add the Balcony run to it. That adds another 4.7 miles, with the last 1.75 miles being flat water. Balcony is a step up at a Class I-II+ (III-), depending on water level. Most folks don't care to add Balcony onto an 11 mile run.
If the Maury flow is low, Balcony may be the alternate run, depending on who is in the group.
I am sorry but I do not recognize you from your Amphibian avatar. Have we paddled together?

James,
Here is a link to a clip from a last year cold weather run on this section of the Maury. It shows a couple of typical rapids and one blown out dam rapid. It will give you an idea of the run. If you have any questions on directions, a map, or cold weather gear needs, call or email me. I expect the water tempt to be in the high 30's to low 40's. So dress for the water tempt, that means dry suit and gloves. I have plenty of raw photos or videos from the Maury (and Balcony too) if you would like to take more of a look. https://photos.app.goo.gl/io4fmuRVL5SvQVpS7
Okay Gang,
NOAA is projecting a flow on the lower Maury of 1220 cfs (3.0') for Saturday at noon. That is a decent flow. It is supposed to be sunny and around 45F, but a bit windy at times. Gusts up to 18 mph. I'd say that it is a big go for Saturday on the Maury, Buena Vista to Glasgow. Meeting at Locher Landing in Glasgow at 10:30 sharp. Reply here if you are coming of if you have questions. Email me if you have questions. jaspivey00@yahoo.com

I'm interested but I'm a bit concerned about doing 11 miles on my first time out in 4 months! I wonder if anyone else has thought about taking out along River Road and shortening the trip by a few miles?
Ginny,
I feel sure we can oblige you with a shorter take-out. We will just run your car up River Road (Rt 663) and drop it where you want. John sometimes takes out on river left, across from Rockbridge Stone Products, that cuts off 3.0 miles. There is another place that cuts off about 4.4 miles, just after the confluence with Buffalo Creek. Just mention it at the meet up and we will make it happen.

Thanks,Allen, not sure if we’ve paddled before or not. I kinda think we did Maury below the post office together on a Coastals trip last spring, but could be wrong. That trip I was paddling Jenny’s old purple Outrage for the first time. I’m set for gear and this is well in my wheelhouse (OC1 III+, K1 IV+). Looking forward to the scenery and a new (to me) river segment.
