Upper New -Class II Saturday of Gauleyfest

Post by SteveEW »

I will be leading the Upper New trip for the club on the Saturday of Gauleyfest. This is a much easier stretch of river that is more appropriate for families and those who are not interested in the challenges of the New River Gorge or the Gauley. Contact me if you have any questions about whether or not this trip would be appropriate for you.
We will meet Saturday morning at 9:30 at Burnwood campground (see below). Do not be late!!!
This trip also helps set a symbiotic shuttle with the New River Gorge trip, so be ready to be flexible on the shuttle.
I plan on arriving Friday night, camping at Burnwood with the club and coordinating with the NRG trip on Saturday morning. We will finish with enough time to go to the festivities in Summersville Saturday afternoon and evening.

Since we are coordinating with the rest of the club, I have included Dave Kessmann's information about the campground.

(Dave has) reserved the NPS Burnwood Group campground Friday, and Saturday nights (nights of 9/16/16 through 9/18/16 checking out Sunday afternoon 9/18/16). It is $5 / person / night. The campground is on the left as you're headed north on Rt. 19. It is just north of the bridge and across Rt. 19 from the New River Gorge visitor’s center. GPS coordinates are 38.073434, -81.078401. It has running water and flush toilets but no showers. Alcohol is allowed but no glass. PETS MUST BE ON A LEASH AT ALL TIMES and they cannot be left unattended. There is only one good sized fire pit for us. There is a large picnic shelter. We cannot make any new fire rings and we have to leave the place in as good a shape (if not better) than we found it or (Dave gets) a beat down from the Man. Our camping area is the first one on the left as you enter the campground. Parking is only along the gravel road - no cars are to be out in the field.

Upper New -Class II Saturday of Gauleyfest

Post by PaddleAllen »

Steve,
Thank you for coordinating this run. Jan and I will be participating on Saturday. However, we will be staying at Ray's Campground. Sorry, electricity, cabin, and hot showers win out for my old bones! Bill Swarm will also be going on Saturday and staying at Ray's.

But, we promise to be prompt to the Saturday morning meeting. We will also be looking for others to run another section on the Upper New on Sunday, probably the Glade section.
Thanks again,
Allen

Hey Steve. As Allen said, I'll be there too, but staying at Rays - need power and I understand this is primitive camping (drat).
I'll be in Friday evening, will look for the campground Friday so we know where to go in the morning.

OK, Gauleyfest newbie here. I'm staying at Ray's because I need guaranteed electricity.

I plan to arrive between 5 and 6 Friday. Will people be hanging out at Burnside in the evening or heading over to the Festival?

Thanks,

I know where I'll be...

Bill,
I will be paddling the lower Gauley with the club tomorrow, and will then head to the festival because I've got family coming in. In years past I have seen plenty of folks in both places because some are just not interested in being at the fest multiple nights.
Looking forward to seeing you wherever you decide to land,

Upper New - Saturday Sept 17

I would like to join in.

Undecided whether to stay at Rays or Burnwood.

Would like to hangout with Coastals Friday evening - wherever that might be.

Want to Paddle Upper New River Sunday of Gauleyfest

Post by PaddleAllen »

Is there anyone planning or wanting to run an upper New River Section on Sunday? Jan and I are looking for some paddle friends to share the fun and shuttle! Maybe Glade Creek Section.

New to Gauley so I'm not at all familiar with the water. I would like to join your group Saturday my sons and I have WW boats but the wife and daughters paddle a gigantic tribe 13.5 that should be more than enough boat to be stable there tomorrow. Does anyone have any input on this. Also could someone post a physical address that a can google I'm completely new to that area.

Steve -
Thanks for coordinating the Upper New trip on Saturday. It was a great day. Interesting to see at low water what creates the hole at Surprise in higher water.

Talk to you soon,
