O.C.T.: Virginia Beach Kayak Surfing Sat 9/12
Saturday Sept 12th
Around Noon-4PM at Little Island Park, Va Beach (Sandbridge)
I'm trying something a little different with this trip. Obviously you don't need a club trip to go to the beach , but I thought it would be nice to have some fellow paddlers out in the waves, so I'm putting this out there. I'm looking for at least 3' surf in the forecast with decent weather. Park in the south end of the lot near the picnic shelters and path to the beach.
This would be a good opportunity for those who have not tried their kayaks in the ocean to learn a few tricks from those who have. If big waves on the river intimidate you, this is a great opportunity to practice, as you'll get a wave every 10s or so, some 300+ per hour. Any whitewater kayak can be surfed in the ocean. SUP, SOT, or inflatable kayak work well also. Sea kayaks-- you decide. Open canoes-- depends on wave height, your skill level and how well you can deal with getting dumped on by breaking waves; I would love to see you try. Bring your family and friends, picnic food, and any beach equipment you want. Note that there are no lifeguards or surfing restrictions at this beach after Labor Day. Low tide is at 2PM.
If you have questions or want to car pool, reply to this post or PM me. I will confirm my participation by Thursday 9/10, based on the forecast at that time.

Forecast is for 2-3 ft surf with a 50% chance of showers, humid 80 degrees and 10 mph wind. Unless the forecast takes a turn for the worse I'm still planning to be there. Anyone else?
There will likely be a lot of people in the parking lot and pavilion area after 1 PM for the local FD fundraiser, but not crowded on the beach.

Maybe I'll bring all of them
I gots a minivan with a roof rack.
I'm willing to drive if anyone wants to carpool from Newport News. Fair warning- I need to run an errand on the way and will need to leave Newport News on the early side (9:30?)
Otherwise I'll meet ya's down there.

I'll probably head to the beach a little earlier in the morning, arriving at 11 or so to give some more cushion before the chance of thunderstorms kicks in. Also it looks like the wind will pick up and the surf will die down some later in the day...
I don't mind paddling in the rain, but T-storms would keep me off the water. We'll see what tomorrow brings, and I'll post any change in plans.
