OTC First timers LJ PFD Run on Sunday June 17
This super awesome trip is already causing lots of chatter, so lets get some first timers on a trip down the lower James. I am excited about showing the river to some new faces and boats, and we have lots of support from some of the best boaters in Richmond. So without further delay, LETS FIRE IT UP!!
When? June 17 2012 (fathers day and my birthday) at 10:30 (please arrive early)
Where? 14th street takeout
Who? Anyone who feels the need to step up the paddling game a bit
What? A well supported, absolutely fun and fabulous trip from Reedy Creek to 14 street
How? Shuttle up and paddle downtown...
If you have solid boat control, can catch eddies, make ferry moves, listen to instruction, and have desire to paddle the lower James, then this trip may be the one for you. It would help if you can roll your boat in moving water, but we will accept peeps who know how to T-rescue in white water. Of course you will need a boat with airbags, paddle, helmet, pfd, and a burning love for all things paddling related...
We will also need some support from experienced boaters, which doesn’t look to be a problem. Our goal is to have two experienced boaters for every one first timer, with one leading and the other sweeping. For safety boaters I would like to have paddlers that are first aid certified, have taken swift water rescue, a rescue pfd with tow tether, a rope bag, a first aid kit is recommended, and a willingness to help the first timers in any way needed.
So the plan is to meet at 14th street before 10:30, It would be nice to meet everyone and get to speak to all the paddlers before setting shuttle. This way we can plan groups according to skill level, and boat types. We will need to set safety in a couple choice spots on the river, so all this must be worked out before we start to paddle down the rapids. It would be ideal if the water could promise to be at a certain level, around 5 feet, but we all know how that works in the summer, so we will see about that. If the river gets above 6 feet, then we may postpone, but we probably will not have to worry about that.
This trip is going to be LOTS OF FUN, and a bit of a rush for some of the first timers. I know my first paddle down the lower James was like the fire at the circus.... INTENCE (in tents) ha-ha.. So be prepared for a couple of hours on the water, with lots of laughs, and some good times with some great people.
IF you responded to Jeff's post about this trip, please let me know if you plan to attend. You can message me here, email is davidanutter@yahoo, or Facebook. I know its fathers day, and that may be bad for some people, so I understand if you can not make it and hope we can do another first timers trip a little later in the summer to accommodate you.
I was also thinking about bringing the grill to the takeout and having a little cook-out at the end of the run. Let me know what you think about it.
Lastly let me thank Mr. Smith for getting this trip started and casting that net, although it was once Gene’s baby, so I guess we should all thank him to!!
All questions, concerns, and comments are welcome. Thank you all for you interest in this trip.

Would anyone care to make a weekend of this?
I haven't seen the BodyWorld exhibit, and an adventurous Saturday could contain both that and UJ-Richmond.
As a C-villain, I hope to camp, hotel, or couch the night.

RIVERS AND PLASTICIZED BODIES!
(just a thought. a very enthusiastic one.)

Re: sure
"The canoe" probably would have been enough information but who knows these days. It seems like everyone wants to take a bathtub down stream with half a paddle lately!open boater wrote: Tell her to look for me, the canoe & the truck.
