Balcony Falls Upstream 8/21/11
Hey, I'm new here I was refered to you by my father who used to be a memeber a few years ago. I've been kayaking for about 15 years off and on though and last time I've done white water was in 07 down the new river gorge. I've been either using rental, canoe, or the wrong type of kayak to do some of the white water during my trips but recently got a proper WW Kayak (dagger mamba).
So I've been looking to take it down some white water and try it out, checking out the forum and the site for a while and was looking at the meetings to go to one of the trips with coastal.
Was looking at possibly going on the trip to Balcony falls Upstream on 8/21 but, was wondering at what time and where exactly is the meeting point for this I don't see it on the map and was also wondering if there's a shuttle service of some sort?

Matt,
Welcome! Usually, trip coordinators don't post all the details on the trips page because they want folks to contact them via the links provided on the list that shows up below the calendar (scroll down). The trip you are talking about is being organized by Ronnie Tucker, so scroll down and click his contact link to send him a private message or e-mail.
If I infer correctly, this trip is actually an attainment trip where they will padding upstream through Balcony Falls rather than downstream. So if that's what you're looking for, contact him.
Otherwise, there are many unofficial trips on the Balcony section as well as the Upper and Lower James in Richmond that may suit your needs - just watch the Paddle Now forum.
Again, welcome and we look forward to paddling with you!
Brandon

Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

Hi, Ronnie Tucker here. I usually wait until about a week before an event to refresh everyone's minds by posting to "Want to Paddle Now" forum. I have not set a time yet, but usually we meet for most events at about 10am-ish. I will post the exact time later, but 10 will probably be it. My upstream is a "practice" run for the Attainment race the following Saturday. You are welcome to come, there won't be racing, at least not for me. It is a really good skill building run. And the best part is there is no shuttle. After we go up, we just float back down. There is no set goal. If you make it half way up that is fine too. Please feel welcome to come. You may leave wondering why EVERYONE doesn't paddle upstream.
