OCT: Upper New June 21 & 22

Post by Raymond »

Our annual Upper New trip is scheduled for June 21 and 22.

The Upper New is a fun intro to bigger water; the rapids are straightforward and there are big recovery pools below each one.

Even better, this year, the Glade Creek section is open again. It’s a great run for Sunday because the shuttle is short (only about 20 minutes one way), and the takeout is closer to home for most people. It’s a fun river trip that includes the two longest and biggest rapids of the section above Silo/Surprise: Grassy Shoals and Quinnimont Rapids (both Class III-).

If you plan to join us, remember to contact Raymond Williams (540-489-1624) or
rwilliam (at) swva (dot) net

Or contact Dave Lewis (see the directory).

At the current levels, we will probably run the Thurmond to Cunard (Surprise) section on Saturday and the Glade Creek section on Sunday. We will put in at Dunglen on Saturday.

For both days, meet at the NRG Canyon Rim Visitors Center at 9:00 or be at the putin by 9:45. If you’re not staying at Chestnut Creek, let me know whether you’re meeting at the NRG V.C. or the putin.

I may stay at Chestnut Creek Campground (304) 574-3136. It's just north of the NRG Bridge on the right. Or I may stay at Mountain Laurel.

We usually eat out on Saturday although a few people eat in camp. Most people also camp Friday night.

Here’s a link to a description of the Surprise section.

I'd like to paddle you both Saturday and Sunday. I'm going over to Summersville on Friday to sea kayak on the lake. I will be at Chestnut Creek Campground Friday night if anyone wants to meet for dinner or brewski.

Raymond, is there a Group Site for us at CCC, or on our own?

tks
Andy

Camping is on your own. In the past there haven't been enough people interested in a group site to make it worth it.

I look forward to seeing you next weekend.

So far I've heard from several people, including one person who emailed me last week, but I didn't get it, so he sent another one today.

If you've emailed and haven't heard back from me, please send another one or call.
