Friday afternoon levels - New River
The flow at Hinton and Thurmond is 2280 cfs. This translates to about -6" on the paddlers gauge at Fayette Station. My guess is that it will be about the same or slightly lower tomorrow (Saturday). At this and lower levels, it's a good idea to stay upright when running Lower Keeney to avoid hit...

Top Gauley
Glad you got to paddle the Elk. Nancy and I had a great time paddling with the group on the Top Gauley on Saturday with new friends (and a few old friends). I think there were 25 river craft and 30 people - kayaks, canoes and a variety of inflatables. The age range was from 6 or 7 to 71 (if I was th...

More about the gauges on the Greenbrier and New
The gauges on the Greenbrier at Alderson and Hilldale as well as the one on the New at Hinton just started to drop. The bubble still hasn't gotten to Thurmond. Looking at the New, I see that the COE is currently releasing 3742 cfs from Bluestone dam and the flow is 4600 at Glen Lyn and 5700 at Radfo...

The New is Hinton is now at 11,900 cfs
The bubble that was coming down the Greenbrier has reached the New at Hinton. The flow there is currently at 11,900 (3.68 feet) and has just started to drop. The bubble should reach Thurmond and NRG tonight or early tomorrow. At that flow, the gauge at Fayette Station should be around 6 feet. Chuck ...

Cherry or Top Gauley on Saturday
Nancy and I are interested in paddling the Cherry or Top Gauley (from the Cherry down to Panther Creek) tomorrow (Saturday). Exactly what we paddle will depend on the water level on the Gauley at Craigsville and on the painted paddlers gauge on the Cherry at Fenwick. We just got home from paddling t...

Class II-III options (if there is enough water)
My wife, Nancy, and I paddle the Cherry and "top Gauley" (from the Cherry to Panther Creek) frequently and have taught aspiring intermediate kayak clinics on both. The gauge to check to see if there is enough water is the USGS gauge at Craigsville - http://waterdata.usgs.gov/wv/nwis/uv/?si...

Flows on the New in WV
The only significant dam that I know of between Glen Lyn and the NRG is Bluestone. According to the Huntington COE web page, the level at Bluestone Lake is very close to summer pool. My GUESS is that the COE will be increasing the release from Bluestone Dam when the bubble of water gets to the lake....

It might be a mixed blessing
Glade Creek Road won't be open, but the weather forecast is for cold (highs in the 30s) and freezing rain/snow Saturday and Sunday.

Summersville Dam Releases
The releases from Summersville Lake are pretty normal for this time of year. After the scheduled releases for "Gauley Season", the COE cuts the amount they release for fish stocking and fishing until the end of October. On November 1st they start releasing more water until the lake reaches...

How do you plan to get to/from the river?
You have pretty long and steep hike in and out if you want to run the Middle Gauley. The access roads at Mason Branch (the UG takeout/MG putin) and Bucklick (the MG takeout/LG putin) are both owned by outfitters and closed to public traffic during Gauley season release days. If you want to put in af...
