OCT - 16th Annual Balcony Attainment Race

Our best turnout in years - apparently folks prefer paddling downstream (due to the drought, we changed to a downriver run from the Maury RR bridge to the AT bridge on the James). We had enough paddlers for 3 classes. Below are the first place finishers with times and photo. Thanks to all the racers...

OCT - 16th Annual Balcony Attainment Race Sunday, Aug 9

Due to the ongoing drought, race organizers have made the call to switch this year's event to a downriver race. Sorry upstream enthusiasts, but the low water just makes it too difficult - your paddle blades will thank us for this change. Meet at Snowden boat ramp (take-out) at 10:00 Sunday to set sh...

15th Annual Balcony Attainment Race Results

Higher then normal water (above 4' at Buchanan) kept the number of racers in the single digits. But those that came enjoyed a good workout with less technical lines. I was the only racer to choose the long course (AT Bridge to Jump Rock) over the short one (Ironman to Jump Rock) - my time of 59:01 b...

14th Annual Balcony Attainment Race Results

New this year was a longer course option. All the racers chose to do this which kept things very competitive. To make it even more interesting, the Buchanan gauge went from 2.3 to 4' overnight. Everyone agreed that we should be able to finish the race prior to the full pulse arrival. We kinda did, a...

OCT - Nelson (Lower Tye) Race is Saturday, May 11

Race the Tye east of Rt. 29. We have access to a private take-out, so this is one of the only days you can paddle the entire Lower Tye. And we provide safety at the 2 biggest rapids (Rockpile and Confluence). PLUS - bus shuttle is included with your registration! Register and drop your boat/gear off...

OCT - Piney River Mini-Tri/Bi, 4/13

Once again we have two options with folks able to choose to run/bike in addition to the run/paddle/bike. Remember that the start is now at the same place as the finish (Rt. 151 trailhead). https://nelsoncountyva.myrec.com/info/activities/program_details.aspx?ProgramID=29883 https://www.nelsoncountyv...

OCT - Share your boat demo

Fun option to combat the lack of water. Everyone who showed up was able to try something new, and no one got wet in spite of the gusty winds! Must say, however, that seeing kites being flown next to the water does little to bolster more courage.

13th Annual Balcony Attainment Race Results

Lucky 13. Brief history. I started this race over a decade ago so that I would have an excuse to paddle a river after the fam's annual week long trip to Nags Head (and to work off all that sun, sand, and spirits). I typically regret that idea about halfway into the race. Small but enthusiastic turno...

http://www.nelsoncountyva.org/NelDRace/ ... Race23.htm
New this year. Register and drop your boat/gear off at put-in by 10:00. Drive to take-out and catch bus shuttle back at 10:30. People only, no boats. Race starts at 11.
And yes, it is very boney, but very doable. I paddled the race course Wed.

OCT - Piney River Mini-Tri/Bi, 4/15

Two big changes.
1. There is a run/bike option in addition to the run/paddle/bike.
2. Start is now at the same place as the finish (Rt. 151 trailhead).
We hope these changes will improve logistics and attendance.
