GAH! Rulz breakers!
"People were not following the rules," he said. "They were out too late on the river and couldn't make their way back in."

Final note about Sunday morning's race. Thom Stanton and I will be IN the river by 6 a.m. setting up the turn buoys. If you are motivated, we would love to have you come out at that time to help drag the turn buoys out to where they will be anchored. We have 6 to set before the 7:00 safety meeting. ...

Calling All Boaters!

As of Monday, 6 days before the race, I have 7 safety boaters for the swim course. We are covering the James River from Tredegar Ironworks to Belle Isle and back. It is a very big course and it takes at least 16 boaters to mark shallow rocks, patrol turn buoys, and shepherd swimmers through the cour...

Thank you to each of the boaters who showed up and helped with the swim this year. Many swimmers needed assistance and with the encouragement from the boaters on the water, all swimmers finished with the one exception of a pro racer. That was an amazing accomplishment. A special "Thank you"...

Final call for boaters to help Sunday morning. Predicted river level will make the swim quite difficult for the competitors. The level will be on the high end of ideal for the really good swimmers, challenging for good swimmers, and a problem for novice and first-time open water swimmers. Based on t...

Why YES! There will be t-shirts! Last year, they were the technical/wicking stuff. The meet director stated that volunteers will get t-shirts and "stuff". Whatever "stuff" is, I have no idea. Typically, it includes water and snacks at the volunteer booth on Brown's Island. That w...

Calling all boaters!

It is that time of year when the Xterra Triathlon comes to town and safety boaters are needed for the swim portion on the James River. Michael Stratton is heading safety this time around so we can certainly use our veteran safety boaters to help out if you are available. This race is Xterra's East C...

High water Heads Up in City of Richmond

I saw 2 boaters this morning who had been surfing at "Z" dam, with their cars parked on Riverside Drive next to the dam, talking to a policeman. So, take your usual precautions today by observing the city's high water ordinance and parking where it is permitted. Keep cars out of the Pearsa...

Calling all Boaters in the Richmond Area

The Xterra Triathlon is coming back to Richmond so it is time again to bring together our boaters to help with swim safety. Post here or PM me if you can help. Detailed information will go out to those I hear from. The races are on Sunday, June 9, and will have 3 separate starts: 8:00 a.m.; 9:15 a.m...
