100 miler scouting/training paddle

Several of us (two tandem canoes) are coming from the Hampton Roads area tomorrow (Saturday, 6/7) to scout the James from Columbia to Maidens. We plan to meet at Maidens about 8:30 am. This is about 25 River miles. This is not the rockiest section, but it is the section that will probably be paddled...

Taking a class is probably the best way, as it does away with a lot of expensive and painful trial and error. Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation are the ones I know about, but the 2012 season is over. There are pool kayak samplers available this winter, but the 2-day beginner whitewater class ...

I am a member of a club in the Hampton Roads area that meets some of your requirements. We paddle outrigger canoes (1,2 and 6-man), surf skis, and sea kayaks. We paddle year round, although during the cold months we often meet in more protected creeks, and paddle our marathon boats. Our main focus i...

If you are interested in paddling for fitness (outrigger, marathon canoe, surf ski, etc), check out Mid-Atlantic Paddler's Association on Facebook. We meet twice a week in the Hampton Roads area to paddle. We have a couple of members in the Williamsburg area, but are much smaller than Coastals.

Southside James River Access

Yes, and would you believe that section of the River is designated by the National Park Service as the John Smith Water Trail? Another Coastal's member and I attended a focus group run by the Park Service to solicit ideas on improving and encouraging use of the water trail. I believe that lack of ac...

We did one session at the Newport News YMCA last year, kind of at the last minute. I hope to possibly schedule 3 next year. We do them on Sunday nights after the pool closes, and I think I charged 10 dollars per person for two hours (as you said, for pool time, and to pay the lifeguards). Since the ...
